Welcome to the Department

Welcome to the Department of Operational Logistics

"Congratulations, Candidate. Your name has appeared on a short list of individuals deemed potentially functional in high stress environments..."

Welcome to the Department — a Skirmish miniatures game of esoteric investigations, tactical engagements, and bureaucratic nonsense.

As a newly appointed Field Operative, your task is simple: follow procedure, complete your assignment, and try not to read anything stamped “CLASSIFIED.”

Players take command of field operatives dispatched by a shadowy, overworked government department tasked with identifying, containing, or—when budgets allow—understanding anomalies. These “Occurrences of Operational Concern” range from a heist gone wrong to an excursion into existential horror.

“If it’s important, we’ll pretend to know what we’re doing.”

Welcome to the Department is a compact, modular skirmish system built for games from 1x1’ up to 3'x3' made up of self-contained themed missions, known internally as “Field Manuals.”
Each operation unfolds through the core loop:

Brief → Deploy → Explore → Engage → Extract.

Designed from the ground up to be played Solo, Co-operatively and/or versus another player the game is designed to give you a thematic sandbox in which to explore your favourite blockbuster or literature, with 'Field manuals' being worked on to expand the game inspired by the likes of 'die hard' through to the post extra-terrestrial worlds of 'roadside picnic' and much more.

The Introductory digital ruleset is planned for release later this year, with print-and-play terrain and miniature assets following soon after via Patreon and the Misfire website.

A prototype physical pack (complete with booklet, game mat, dice, stickers, and measurement tool) is in development for demo events and conventions, including (hopefully) Salute 2025.

If you'd like to keep up to date with the project I'll be sharing information here on the blog, on the Misfire Discord and Patreon.

We are currently reaching out to sculptors, artists and printers, if you want to get involved with the project please reach out!

We'll be sharing more on the game including some of its core mechanics next time, see you then!
